Second edition
Mario "Abdullah" Cavallaro, 64 pages.

In the Name of God, Clement and Merciful

Introduction

Prayer is undoubtedly one of the most important practices in Islam. Second in importance among the five pillars of Islam only to the profession of faith, prayer was defined by the Prophet (upon him peace) as "the (supporting) pillar of religion", furthermore, its great importance is underlined by the fact that it is the only pillar whose obligatory nature has been transmitted to the Prophet (peace be upon him) in heaven, unlike all the other pillars of Islamic practice; in fact, the order to fulfill the prayer was transmitted to him on the occasion of his miraculous ascension to heaven (lailatul-israi

wal-mi' râj).

Through prayer the Muslim establishes with his

Sir, a direct and constant "contact". It has been said that if you want God to speak to you you just need to read the Quran and if you want to talk to God you just need to say a prayer. A man asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) to pray to God for him so that he could be close to him in

Paradise; he replied, “Help me with many prostrations.”

The believer understands through prayer what his true position is in this world and that is complete dependence on the Almighty: he will turn only to Him to ask for anything (for his needs regarding this life or the afterlife), getting used to do not depend on anyone other than Him. The Prophet (peace be upon him ) every time he found himself faced with a difficulty or was frightened by something he immediately took refuge in prayer.

Prayer, therefore, does not simply consist of performing movements and pronouncing particular phrases but turning with all humility towards one's Lord. Before praying, the person praying must prepare himself spiritually, remembering that the true meaning of moving towards Mecca is to humbly present himself before God. It is reported that, as the prayer approached, the face of Imâm "Ali changed and he began to tremble. To those who asked him the reason, he replied: "It is the moment to carry out the task of trust of which the heavens and the mountains were afraid". It is said that Abu Bakr, when he prayed, seemed for his immobility a piece of wood stuck in the ground.

Alongside this "spiritual" aspect of prayer, it must be underlined that in Islam it is fundamental to scrupulously respect the rules and precepts that God has revealed to His devout Prophet (upon him peace) in fulfilling this obligation. In His Glorious Book, God has told us that he is the "model" of life that we must follow:

"You had a good model in the Messenger of God"

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: «Pray as you have seen me pray».

This booklet is a small effort made to introduce, in the simplest way, the fundamental notions regarding the second pillar of Islamic practice, prayer. It is a short discussion that does not claim to exhaust the topic but to provide, in the most complete and concise way, the fundamental information for performing the prayer. Compared to the first edition, some pages on supererogatory prayers have been added while the part concerning the prayer of those traveling has been expanded and reorganized.

Other parts of the book have also been revised and expanded.

In the hope of having succeeded in providing valid help to those interested in the topic, I ask God

Almighty to welcome this modest effort with His high favor and to the readers not to forget me in their prayers.
